Sukanto Tanoto’s Organization Enables Parents to Take Progressive Approach to Breastfeeding

It is an indisputable fact that breast-milk does for a human baby what nothing else can. It provides the optimal level of nutrition, it contains life-saving antibodies, it reduces the risk of many diseases, and it promotes a healthy weight. Scientists organization are yet to invent a formula that can match it.

Here in Indonesia, breastfeeding is a protected right under Article 128 of Health Act no.36 of 2009. That’s no surprise given infants who breastfed have a mortality rate six times less than infants who not breastfed. And breastfeeding is a crucial component in pursuit of Goal (good health and well-being) of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Despite the official legislation, however, Indonesia still demonstrates a persistent lack of breastfeeding. This is associate with another pertinent problem—stunting. Where children under the age of two have not yet reach the standard height and are at further risk of being afflict by the condition during their adult lives.

What’s more, breastfed infants have been observed to have higher IQ’s than infants who have not been breastfed. From ages three to seven, the difference is magnified even further.

Suffice it to say that breastfeeding is an integral part of a child’s early development. Not to mention the strong bonding it facilitates between the baby and its mother.

This is the sole reason why Sukanto Tanoto family’s philanthropy organization, the Tanoto Foundation, launched its ‘Strengthening Indonesia’s early Generation by Accelerating Potential (SIGAP) programme – to ensure that children in Indonesia experience optimal growth and development by receiving quality care that prepares them for learning as they begin their formal education.

While the importance of breastfeeding is common knowledge in most parts of the world. Research has shown that Indonesia shows a lack of knowledge on the subject. This is a significant challenge for mothers here. Many of them opt for formula milk in lieu of breastfeeding partly because formula milk is actively promote in the media and partly because of a lack of approval or encouragement from fathers.

SIGAP Programs

To address this issue, the SIGAP programme works together with activists from the ASI. Ayah community to facilitate open discussions that are beneficial for new fathers. Their most recent session, titled ‘Investments; let’s get to know the factory!’, invited fathers to comprehend the physical and psychological processes that could further aid breastfeeding.

The event gave facilitators from Ayah ASI a chance to give presentations on important subjects that are still consider taboo. Such as the physical changes of breasts from pregnancy through to postpartum and how to stimulate milk production.

The Importance of Healthy and Prosperous Future Generation

Sukanto Tanoto Foundation also addressed the need for proper nursing spaces by setting up a dedicated breastfeeding room at their office in Jakarta, replete with comfortable chairs, a relaxing environment, and a refrigerator for storing pumped breast-milk.

As such, the Tanoto Foundation recognizes breastfeeding as “an important foundation for a healthy and prosperous future generation”. The Tanoto Foundation also affirms that, “Breastfeeding also promotes bonding between parents and babies, benefiting the baby’s sense of security, social-emotional, and mental health. Let’s support breastfeeding mothers together!”
